There is a lot of hand-wringing over the impact of artificial intelligence on the media and entertainment industries. A lot.
In its 2024 Media Landscape Report, press release and marketing platform Medianet reported that 79% of 800 Australian journalists surveyed were concerned about the impact generative AI could have on the overall integrity or quality of journalism, but 74% had not yet personally used generative AI in their work, and 19% were not aware of how AI is being used in their newsrooms!
In addition, 67% of respondents believed that generative AI could potentially replace aspects of their jobs. Further, 12% percent of respondents claimed to know someone who has lost work or lost work themselves due to the uptake of generative AI in 2023.
And, yes, some of this hand-wringing is justified. There will be short-sighted companies who will deploy AI at the expense of human employees, but their focus purely on the bottom line will also be at the expense of what attracts audiences to their platform in the first place.
